Its skin is bright red with a stripe over 50–75% of its surface. Red Jonathan has a crisp flesh, that is sweet and juicy with a tang. It is a late ripening apple that is good for hand eating, freezing or cooking. Refrigerated storage time: 120 days. This apple is suitable for almost all of the climate zones in the United States. They prefer cold winters, moderate summers and high humidity. Apples are deciduous and the Red Jonathan must be pollinated in order to produce fruit. Suggested pollinators are Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, or Red Delicious.  Apple trees should be pruned in summer and winter. Fruit trees need a minimum of 6-8 hours of sunlight daily, and they need regular watering.

Gravenstein Apple (Red Gravenstein) is an improved strain of the old favorite cooking apple with darker red stripes. It has an excellent quality and famous for sauces, baking and fresh use. Pick the apples frequently because of uneven ripening. This can be somewhat controlled by heavy pruning. The Red Gravenstein is a hardy variety and can withstand difficult conditions.
