The Arborvitae - Can Can, Thuja plicata 'Can Can', is a tough, hardy, and easy to grow Western Cedar that has a conical form with dark green foliage and cream colored tips. The Can Can arborvitae resists winter burn and will provide durable dark green color for four seasons. Use it for screening or as an accent plant. It is heat tolerant, has glossier foliage, tolerates a wider range of soils, and unlike its eastern counterpart, is deer resistant. It makes an excellent small specimen in the garden or can be trimmed to create a hedge or an evergreen screen. Western Sand Cherry, prunus besseyi, displays attractive, single, white flowers in May, and then it produces an abundance of 3/4 purple-black sweet fruits.  They can be eaten fresh, dried, or processed as jellies and pies. This hardy rounded shrub has silver-green foliage.  Plant the shrub where it will be in direct sunlight for most or all of the day. Well-drained soil is best, but isn't an absolute requirement, as sand cherry is very adaptable to poor soil. The Compact Japanese Holly, Ilex crenata 'Compacta', is a well-branched, somewhat oval-shaped, and compact shrub to 4 feet high and wide. It does well in neutral to acid soil. Plant this holly in mass groups as low shrubs, low hedges, or tall groundcovers. The compact habit of growth and small leaves make these ideal plants for use as clipped, formal hedges. Japanese Holly develops without clipping making it well suited for planting along a foundation. Plant 3 to 4 feet apart to form a hedge, plant farther apart if used in a shrub border. It shears fairly well, but will thin slightly toward the base, especially if not located in full sun. This compact holly can be sheared into various shapes. This plant is an evergreen and it is deer resistant! If you are using this plant as a hedge, clip the hedge so it is wider at the bottom. The Massachusetts Bearberry, evergreen shrub, Arctostaphylos u. 'Massachusetts', is a low growing, mat forming groundcover. It grows 6-12 inches tall, 2-4 feet wide, has small glossy leaves, and can cover a 15' diameter area, but is not invasive. This green foliage turns a bronzy red in fall and winter. The bell shaped, dainty flowers appear in the spring. The fruit, that is bright red and highly decorative, appears in late summer, persisting into fall. This low 'Massachusetts' shrub thrives in a variety of soils, but does best in poor, infertile sandy acidic soil, and is salt tolerant. Do not fertilize, and pruning is not necessary.
