Western Sand Cherry - Sale Price: $64.25 Western Sand Cherry, prunus besseyi, displays attractive, single, white flowers in May, and then it produces an abundance of 3/4 purple-black sweet fruits.  They can be eaten fresh, dried, or processed as jellies and pies. This hardy rounded shrub has silver-green foliage.  Plant the shrub where it will be in direct sunlight for most or all of the day. Well-drained soil is best, but isn't an absolute requirement, as sand cherry is very adaptable to poor soil. It grows 5-6 feet in height and width, forming a rounded shape, and makes a great shrub for farmstead windbreaks. It does well in neutral to acid soil. Plant this holly in mass groups as low shrubs, low hedges, or tall groundcovers. The compact habit of growth and small leaves make these ideal plants for use as clipped, formal hedges. Japanese Holly develops without clipping making it well suited for planting along a foundation. Plant 3 to 4 feet apart to form a hedge, plant farther apart if used in a shrub border. It shears fairly well, but will thin slightly toward the base, especially if not located in full sun.
