Witch-hazel - Common - Sale Price: $64.25 The Common Witch-Hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, is extraordinary in its flowering habits. It flowers in late October to early December. Many times its slender yellow petals are the only signs of color in the dormant woods. Witch-hazel is pollinated by the winter moth. After pollination, the fruits become dormant for the winter, developing over the following growing season and maturing in the fall, 10-12 months after pollination. Seeds are dispersed by gravity, or are eaten and excreted by birds. Witch-hazel seeds germinate the following spring or enter the seed bank. Early growth is slow, and in fact remains slow throughout the life of the tree in its typical shady habitat. As individuals, witch-hazel probably does not live more than 100 years, but they reproduce from root sprouts, and clones may live for a very long time.

Elderberry - Golden Elder - Sale Price: $57.10 Golden Elder, Sambucus canadensis 'Aurea', is a hardy, rapid growing shrub with bright golden yellow leaves. The clusters of tiny white flowers in spring are followed by bright red fruits in August. These fruits are excellent for making pies, jam and wine. This broad rounded shaped shrub grows in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, and grows 8-12 feet in height and width. The best golden foliage color is created in full sun. Golden Elder tolerates a wide range of soils, but prefers moist, humus soils. Perhaps best when massed in naturalized areas where suckering spread is acceptable. Also effective in shrub borders, roadside plantings, wet or low areas or as a screen.

Dogwood - Cardinal Red Osier - Sale Price: $64.25 The Cardinal Red Osier Dogwood, Cornus sericea 'Cardinal', is a MNRC introduction. The Cardinal Red Osier Dogwood was selected for its bright red winter twig color. Cardinal Red is best grown in organically rich, medium wet to wet soils in full sun to part shade but tolerates a wide range of soils, including swampy or boggy conditions. This plant is a hybrid Dogwood that was developed by the University of Minnesota in 1986. It was an NC-7 Trials top-performing plant and it received the 2004 Plant of Merit. Tiny white flowers appear in flat-topped clusters in late spring. Flowers give way to clusters of creamy white fruit in late summer. Fruit is very attractive to birds and is generally considered to have as much if not more ornamental interest than the flowers. Maple - Compact Amur Maple - Sale Price: $34.95 The Compact Amur Maple, Acer ginnala 'Compactum', has a dense, compact, shrubby form, and it is multi-stemmed. The dark green leaves are three lobed with a long, pointed central lobe, and Amur's foliage is more delicate than the larger shrub.  It displays a fantastic fall color that ranges from orange to red. The fragrant clusters of small, pale yellow flowers in spring are not particularly noticeable. The double samara fruit turns from green to brown in mid-summer. Compact Amur Maple makes an excellent hedge or individual specimen shrub, and the hedge can be sheared and maintained at 3 to 4 feet. This Amur Maple requires a well-drained soil, and it will tolerate shade, but develops a better fall color if grown in full sun.
