Hollyhock - Crème de Cassis
Hollyhock Crème de Cassis, Alcea 'Crème de Cassis', has tall stalks that are covered with showy 3-4 white edged blooms with scrumptious raspberry centers. This mouthwatering color combination, makes this stunning Hollyhock so unique. Scrumptious veined flowers in juicy blackcurrant, fade to paler berry shades around the edges of each bloom. This treat gets even sweeter with 'Crème de Cassis' semi-double, and single flowers, bloom on the same stems! Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border, working great along walls or fences. May need to be staked if planted in a windy site. Rich, moist, well-drained soil is essential. Hollyhocks can be grown under Black Walnut trees; they are tolerant of the toxic juglone that is emitted through the trees roots.

The Spiderwort 'Concord Grape', Tradescantia ‘Concord Grape’, has dark bluish-green foliage with purple flowers. The flowers open for one day but new blooms appear from June to October. Sedum Star Dust, Sedum 'Star Dust', is a pale pink budded succulent sedum with grey-green leaves, topped with large, flat, white flower-heads in late summer. Star Dust begins to produce green broccoli-like buds in mid-summer, which gradually open into large clear-white flower heads, later developing a tinge of pink. Star Dust is a valuable late source of nectar for butterflies and bees too. This sedum looks great planted in bold drifts towards the front of a sunny, well-drained border. Seed heads also add some winter interest. It is best to apply a thin layer of compost each spring, followed by a 2-inch layer of mulch to keep soil moist and control weeds.
