Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits are America’s favorite biological mosquito controls. Unlike chemical sprays, Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits kill mosquitoes before they can become flying, biting, disease-spreading adults. The active ingredient in both Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits is called B.t.i (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis), a bacterium that’s deadly to mosquito larvae but harmless to other living things. Just float biodegradable Mosquito Dunks or sprinkle Mosquito Bits in ponds, birdbaths, fountains, water gardens or wherever water collects and remains for periods of time. When female mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water treated with a Mosquito Dunk or Mosquito Bits, the mosquito larvae will hatch, begin to eat the B.t.i. and die. Each Mosquito Dunk will treat up to 100 square feet of surface water for about 30 days. Or sprinkle one teaspoon of Mosquito Bits per 25 square feet of water surface area or one tablespoon per 75 square feet. Mosquito Bits will kill mosquito larvae for seven to 14 days. Mosquito Bits are also effective in grassy or marshy areas and where mosquito populations are extremely dense and a quick kill is needed. Mosquito Dunks are now approved for organic production by the USDA National Organic Program, and they are also approved for use in fish habitats and animal watering troughs.
