New Jersey Tea
New Jersey Tea, Ceanothus ''Marie Bleu™', is an outstanding compact plant that is covered with loads of misty blue flower heads in late spring. Once flowing is finished, attractive red seed heads appear, adding another season of garden interest. 'Marie Bleu' is truly garden worthy. Marie Bleu is well adapted to most any garden soil, so long as it is not too wet. It is tolerant of drought once it is established. Shear lightly after blooming to produce a stronger rebloom. Prune in late fall or early spring. In Northern states, this plant may dieback to the ground though roots are hardy and the plant will recover in time to flower. The name New Jersey tea probably came from the use of these plants dried leaves. Allegedly, this was a popular tea in the Revolutionary War. The New Jersey Tea plant is highly adaptable to various soils and is quite drought tolerant due to its massive, deep root system. There is always space for New Jersey Tea in any landscape, and it will look terrific in yours as well!

The Holly, Dwarf Yaupon, 'Ilex vomitoria 'Nana', is a dwarf, compact formed holly with small shiny leaves. It is excellent in planter boxes or as a low hedge. This plant matures at 3-5 feet high by 8-10 feet wide if left unpruned. The Dwarf Yaupon makes a gigantic mounded cushion if not pruned. Fruits on female yaupon holly are a beautiful red, in contrast to the shiny black fruits of Japanese holly. The showy berries often last for several months and they attract birds. It will grow in full shade to full sun, but the more light it has, the more dense its foliage will be. It is drought and salt spray tolerant. Commonly known as Japanese Barberry, this compact little shrub’s burgundy-colored foliage is a dramatic —and welcome— contrast in a landscape dominated by green everything-else. ‘Concorde’ has very small teardrop-shaped leaves on thorny branches which form an orderly round plant that tops out at not much more than a couple of feet. Use ‘Concorde’ as a foundation planting or berm or border edging, and in any number of other small, sunny spaces where you need a plant of a different color. Full sun keeps the leaves their pretty royal purple color, which will gently turn deep red in the fall, and through the winter you’ll be treated to lovely red berries. The Japanese Holly 'Heller's', Ilex crenata 'Helleri', is a very dense and dwarf form that reaches a height of 3 feet with an equal spread. It is a good substitute for boxwood because of its small dark green leaves. 'Heller's' can be used as an accent plant, in mass plantings, as a landscape specimen, and in rock gardens. This plant is used in the landscape in front of taller shrubs for a contrast in your landscape scene. It is best that it has a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system.
