Dogwood - Cardinal Red Osier - Sale Price: $64.25 The Cardinal Red Osier Dogwood, Cornus sericea 'Cardinal', is a MNRC introduction. The Cardinal Red Osier Dogwood was selected for its bright red winter twig color. Cardinal Red is best grown in organically rich, medium wet to wet soils in full sun to part shade but tolerates a wide range of soils, including swampy or boggy conditions. This plant is a hybrid Dogwood that was developed by the University of Minnesota in 1986. It was an NC-7 Trials top-performing plant and it received the 2004 Plant of Merit. Tiny white flowers appear in flat-topped clusters in late spring. Flowers give way to clusters of creamy white fruit in late summer. Fruit is very attractive to birds and is generally considered to have as much if not more ornamental interest than the flowers. It produces dark pink flowers which contrast nicely with the dark green, coarse foliage. The Haaga will begin to bloom in May. This plant needs excellent drainage, mulching and a peat moss soil additive. Roots will rot in poorly drained soil. It will not do well in windy sites. This shrub is fussy about its soil conditions. The soil needs to be rich and acidic. It is a good practice to apply thick mulch around the root zone in colder climates. Any pruning should be done after flowering in order to avoid removing any of the current season’s flowers! The Haaga is a dense evergreen shrub and it is a highly valued landscape ornamental. The large groups of showy pink flowers appear on even young plants. The Haaga is a very effective accent plant. Dwarf Rhododendron!

The trailing growth, with beautiful blue-green foliage and fast growth, makes it a good ground cover. It keeps its good color all year round. 'Blue Pacific' is a ground cover type juniper used in foundation plantings, around tall shrubs and trees. It looks especially lovely draped over retaining walls and crawling over raised beds.
