Spirea - Gumball
Gumball Spirea, spiraea x bumalda 'Gumball', is a compact plant that displays attractive hot pink flowers in May-June. These flowers are complimented by the new growth of leaves that emerge purplish, then turn a bluish-green in spring and summer.  In the fall the leaves turn brilliant shades of burgundy, orange and yellow! A nice sized compact shrub, it grows 2' high to 4' wide which makes it a good low shrub border.  ‘Gumball’ is ideal for small spaces. This spirea will thrive in most locations and should be pruned after flowering and in early spring.  It prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained soil. Transplant from its container for best results.  It is great for group or mass plantings, borders, or for foundation plant. Gumball is resistant to drought and is very urban tolerant. * Fall color * Low shrub * Drought resistant

Hydrangea Edgy Hearts, Hydrangea 'Edgy™ Hearts' PPAF, produces a dark pinkish-red flower that has heart-shaped petals. These petals are emphasized by narrow white line margins along the edges. Hydrangea Edgy™ Hearts PPAF was developed in Dresden, Germany and grows to 2-4 feet with strong stems and glossy foliage. The addition of aluminum sulfate will push the flower color to a blue hue creating a dramatic new look. Moisture is a necessity of this plant. Use them in stylish pots or as part of a garden border planting. Make sure you feed generously in spring and autumn to be rewarded with great flower performance. The rich pink and white variegated flowers of 'Edgy Hearts' turn blue and white in acidic soils, and then they change to a beautiful green shade as they age. Use lime to intensify the deep colors of the flowers. Flower color is affected by pH. For blue flowers, the soil must be more acidic and for pink flowers soil must be more alkaline. The best time to prune is after it blooms. Zones 5-9.

The Aucuba Gold Dust, 'Aucuba japonica 'Variegata', is a compact growing evergreen shrub 6 to 10 feet high and has slightly less in spread w ith large glossy dark-green leaves heavily sprinkled with yellow spots. This plant will brighten any shady location. The glossy foliage appears to splashed with yellow paint. Gold Dust responds well to pruning. It can be kept severely pruned to a compact three foot by three foot shrub. Prune in the spring before new growth begins. It is ideal as a dense screen and in difficult spots in foundation plantings. It is excellent for urban sites and stands up well to inner-city pollution. Aucubas prefer shade and will thrive in the shadiest of spots, even under trees where no grass grows. 'Gold Dust' will flower in early spring and produce red berries in October.

The Blueberry Delight Juniper, J. comminis depressa 'AmiDak', is a North Dakota State University introduction. 'AmiDak' is a dense, low spreading juniper that annually produces heavy crops of blueberry-like cones. The plant gets its name from the heavy crops of these berry-like cones, which resemble blueberries. The fruit is often used as a flavoring in sauerkraut, stuffings, vegetable pates, and is an essential ingredient of gin. Blueberry Delight Juniper has a foliage that is a rich, dark green with contrasting silvery-blue hues on the upper leaf surface. Its summer color is retained well in winter. Succeeds in most soils so long as they are well drained, preferring a neutral or slightly alkaline soil. It also does well in chalky or heavy clay soils.

The Compact Amur Maple, Acer ginnala 'Compactum', has a dense, compact, shrubby form, and it is multi-stemmed. The dark green leaves are three lobed with a long, pointed central lobe, and Amur's foliage is more delicate than the larger shrub.  It displays a fantastic fall color that ranges from orange to red. The fragrant clusters of small, pale yellow flowers in spring are not particularly noticeable. The double samara fruit turns from green to brown in mid-summer. Compact Amur Maple makes an excellent hedge or individual specimen shrub, and the hedge can be sheared and maintained at 3 to 4 feet. This Amur Maple requires a well-drained soil, and it will tolerate shade, but develops a better fall color if grown in full sun. The Holly, Dwarf Yaupon, 'Ilex vomitoria 'Nana', is a dwarf, compact formed holly with small shiny leaves. It is excellent in planter boxes or as a low hedge. This plant matures at 3-5 feet high by 8-10 feet wide if left unpruned. The Dwarf Yaupon makes a gigantic mounded cushion if not pruned. Fruits on female yaupon holly are a beautiful red, in contrast to the shiny black fruits of Japanese holly. The showy berries often last for several months and they attract birds. It will grow in full shade to full sun, but the more light it has, the more dense its foliage will be. It is drought and salt spray tolerant. This broadleaf evergreen shrubs needs to planted in well-drained soil. It is drought tolerant and it is tolerant of salt spray. Zones 6-10.
