Winter King Hawthorn
Small Ornamental Tree with Outstanding Winter Interest  The Winter King Hawthorn is a small ornamental tree with particular winter interest. It would do well anywhere you’d like an ornamental tree but don’t have much room. The outstanding feature of your Hawthorn is its winter features. The silver-grey bark tends to peel, revealing an inner peachy-copper hue. This is best exposed after the dark green leaves transform to their golden reds in autumn and fall to the ground. The younger branches tend toward a lighter green shade, giving your Hawthorn additional color and contrast. It’s in autumn when you’ll also notice the ½ inch bright red berries. The berries remain through the winter and are a welcome treat for your wildlife. Your Winter King Hawthorn can reach a height of 30 feet with an equal spread. The 2 inch glossy green leaves with serrated edges do a terrific job of filling out the canopy, aiding in the dense growth pattern of your tree. You’ll love the clusters of ¾ inch white flowers that appear, their gentle fragrance a welcome addition to your spring yard. The Winter King Hawthorn is a hardy tree that is relatively small in stature but will still provide you with year-round interest. However, the time it truly shines is in the winter. A Hawthorn in your yard during the winter months has the effect of a silvery-grey tree decorated with dangling red berries. It truly is a “winter king” among trees in the usually barren cold landscape, and a must-have for your yard this year. * Outstanding winter interest * Year-round interest * Great for wildlife * Hardy

Hackberry - DetailsHackberry - Sale Price: $64.25
Fast Growing Tree with Edible Fruit The Hackberry is a fast growing, deciduous tree that produces edible fruit. Plant one in your yard for its shade and seasonal interest, especially if you have a place where the soil is too poor for other trees. Your Hackberry can grow up to 60 feet with a 40-50 foot spread, so it’s quite an expansive shade tree for your yard. It has a cylindrical shape with 5-inch alternate, green leaves with undersides of a slightly yellow hue. Those leaves will turn completely yellow in autumn for a showy accent in your yard. Your Hackberry’s foliage arrives at the same time as the ¼-inch spring flowers, giving your tree a vivacious, lime-green appearance that will certainly draw your eye. Those flowers will eventually give way to 1/3-inch, deep-purple drupes that can persist on your tree into the winter months. The drupes have a somewhat date-like flavor and were traditionally used by Native Americans as a food source. Wildlife will also treasure the tiny fruits for the added nutrition they can provide, in addition to the shelter and nesting opportunities the tree presents. The Hackberry’s trunk has a corky appearance, offering some added decorative definition to the barren winter landscape. That wood can also be used for furniture or other projects (it’s soft but heavy). Hackberry trees are tolerant of most conditions, including wind and urban conditions. It’s a great way to have an impressive shade tree with ornamental appeal in less time than other large trees would require. The edible fruit sweetens the deal as a fun and useful addition to an already outstanding tree. * Fast-growing shade* Spring and fall color* Edible fruit* Wildlife interest

Sunburst Honeylocust - DetailsSunburst Honeylocust - Sale Price: $107.05
Shade Tree with a Tropical Feel The Sunburst Honeylocust is a deciduous tree prized for its lovely foliage. They make lovely front yard specimens, and a few planted along the street would also draw attention. Your Sunburst Locust’s light green leaves and open canopy will create the charming effect of dappled sunlight in your yard rather than the full shade that more dense trees provide. It’s a way to have shade without the heavy, sometimes overwhelming presence of the larger trees such as Oaks or Redwoods. Your Locust is big without being too big and shady without being too shady for your grass and other plantings. Having a Sunburst Locust is a way for you to have all the benefits of a Locust tree without the two features many people dislike. By choosing a Sunburst Locust, you’ll be free of the thorns (that can be quite sharp), and the seed pods (that can be messy), that other Locusts have. Leaves of the Sunburst Locust are eight inches long and composed of many small, individual leaflets. This gives the foliage a tropical, fern-like appearance and will feel pleasantly soft and smooth as you run the leaves through your fingers. Leaves begin as yellow in the spring, transition to green and again turn yellow in the fall. Small green-yellow flowers form in the spring and into early summer, but aren’t very showy. Bees and other pollinators will love the Locust in your yard though, and make good use of those early blooms. The Sunburst Locust’s hardy nature means you won’t have to provide any special care to ensure its success. It can also grow up to 2 feet a year, so you won’t have to wait long for a mature tree to grace your yard. The Sunburst Locust is a lovely tree and a superior choice for your landscape. * Attractive foliage* No thorns or seed pods* Fast growing

Chinese Chestnut - DetailsChinese Chestnut - Sale Price: $78.50
The Chinese Chestnut is currently planted as a replacement for the American Chestnut, which was obliterated by blight in the 1900s. Most store-shelf chestnuts usually come from Spain, but the Spanish Chestnut tree is not at all cold-hardy and can be vulnerable to blight as well. The Chinese Chestnut serves both as an ornamental dark-green shade tree and as a less-risky nut producer, providing its caretaker with pounds of sweet chestnuts to roast, puree, boil and even make gluten-free flour out of. This all-purpose deciduous tree is blight-resistant and prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soils in full sun, but can manage in dry soils of varying pH; hot, arid climates are OK as well. A good all-around choice for a yard shade tree, the Chinese Chestnut will bring yellow and gold color to your autumn landscape and is amazing when planted near Autumn Purple Ash. Zones 4-8.
