Elderberry - Golden Elder - Sale Price: $57.10 Golden Elder, Sambucus canadensis 'Aurea', is a hardy, rapid growing shrub with bright golden yellow leaves. The clusters of tiny white flowers in spring are followed by bright red fruits in August. These fruits are excellent for making pies, jam and wine. This broad rounded shaped shrub grows in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, and grows 8-12 feet in height and width. The best golden foliage color is created in full sun. Golden Elder tolerates a wide range of soils, but prefers moist, humus soils. Perhaps best when massed in naturalized areas where suckering spread is acceptable. Also effective in shrub borders, roadside plantings, wet or low areas or as a screen.

The foliage emerges bronze, turns yellow-gold in summer and develops a pink-red fall color. Sent to America from Japan in 1861, this continues to be one of the best loved varieties. The Pee Gee can be pruned at any time except when they begin to form bloom heads in the summer. The color of blooms on a PeeGee changes during its bloom period. Beginning as a white flower, the blooms age to pink, and finally a rusty brown in autumn. The blooms can easily be used for drying. This plant can reach 6+ foot in height at maturity. PeeGee hydrangeas blooms do not change with the pH level of the soil. Use this plant as a border, cut flower, dried flower, specimen plant, or if trained, as a flowering tree.
