Aucuba - Gold Dust The Aucuba Gold Dust, 'Aucuba japonica 'Variegata', is a compact growing evergreen shrub 6 to 10 feet high and has slightly less in spread w ith large glossy dark-green leaves heavily sprinkled with yellow spots. This plant will brighten any shady location. The glossy foliage appears to splashed with yellow paint. Gold Dust responds well to pruning. It can be kept severely pruned to a compact three foot by three foot shrub. Prune in the spring before new growth begins. It is ideal as a dense screen and in difficult spots in foundation plantings. It is excellent for urban sites and stands up well to inner-city pollution. Aucubas prefer shade and will thrive in the shadiest of spots, even under trees where no grass grows. 'Gold Dust' will flower in early spring and produce red berries in October.
