Hollyhock - Nigra The Nigra Hollyhock, 'Alcea rosea', has large single, very dark maroon to almost black flowers. (The darkest flower in this family). The flowers grow on rigid, towering spikes or spires which typically reach a height of 4’ to 6’. The Hollyhock family is made up of a rather large group that exhibits tall stature and is biennial in nature. Although they are short lived, they reseed themselves.
