The Nigra Hollyhock, 'Alcea rosea', has large single, very dark maroon to almost black flowers.  (The darkest flower in this family).  The flowers grow on rigid, towering spikes or spires which typically reach a height of 4’ to 6’.  The Hollyhock family is made up of a rather large group that exhibits tall stature and is biennial in nature.   Although they are short lived, they reseed themselves.  The large blooms of  ‘Nigra’ Hollyhock flower in the summer months from June to August!   Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border, working great along walls or fences.  They are best planted in full sun in a well-drained area.  Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border and great along walls or fences; may need to be staked if planted in a windy site. ‘Nigra’ prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil.  Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions and some light shade, but will not tolerate wet winter soils.  Hollyhocks can be grown under Black Walnut trees; they are tolerant of the toxic juglone that is emitted through the trees roots. Clematis Kilian Donahue, Clematis 'Kilian Donahue', is a wonderful new cultivar with a multicolor look! This early bloomer opens with ruby red centers that fade out to brilliant fuchsia bars, with orchid colored petal edges.  As the 5 flowers age, they fade to lavender with pink bars. An excellent repeat bloomer throughout the summer months, this clematis has flowers that mature through a series of rich bicolor combinations ending with lavender and rich pink. It almost appears as two clematis planted together, since the new and older flowers bloom together at the same time! The Astilbe ‘Fanal’, Astilbe arendsii, is a colorful feathery flower with deep red blooms and lacy deep green or bronze-green foliage. The foliage in spring is mahogany, but as autumn approaches, the blooms turn to shades of brown that look wonderful in winter snowscapes. The flowers contrast wonderfully with the dark green glossy foliage.  Astilbe ‘Fanal’ blooms in midsummer and is 24” tall and a plant width of 18-24”.  Do not allow Astilbe ‘Fanal’ to dry out.
