Inkberry - Nordic
The Inkberry 'Nordic Compact', Ilex glabra 'Chamzin', is an outstanding, carefree, and compact shrub that matures at 3 to 4 feet high and wide. The evergreen leaves are a deep lustrous green and glisten in sunlight. It is excellent for foundation, hedges, masses, and as an accent plant. It is best to follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a tidy, neat appearance, shear annually to shape. 'Nordic Compact' is well suited to low hedges, but single specimens can also be sheared for topiary-like precision form. Because of wind resistance, it makes an excellent choice that helps with snow drift. This Inkberry prefers moist, well-drained, slightly-acidic soils, rich in organic matter. It is tolerant of continually wet soils and can be easily pruned to maintain size and shape. The Nordic is a male plant so it does not produce fruit. This plant is tolerant of poorly drained soils.
