Sumac - Staghorn - Sale Price: $64.20 The Staghorn Sumac, Rhus typhina, is the most well-known sumac. Its branches resemble deer antlers. Staghorn sumac reaches 25 feet in height at maturity with an equal spread. It is not as tolerant of poorly drained soils as other sumacs. The large dark crimson - or rarely orange to yellow - pinnate leaves of this sumac have 15-31 narrow, leaflets that can be up to (6) long. The stems and fruits of Staghorn Sumac are densely hairy, as in the velvet stage of a stag's antlers. These colorful, nonpoisonous shrubs or small trees are rhizomatous. The large clumps form bright splashes of color along forest margins, road banks, and fencerows and in old fields over much of the Appalachians.

With a plant height of 2-3' and a spread of 3', it does add color and texture to the landscape. Plant 'Green Velvet' in full shade to part sun, in a well-drained area. Boxwoods are tolerant of pruning and shearing, but avoid cultivating around this plant because they have very shallow roots. Remove dead and damaged branches annually to improve the air circulation. Viburnum - Sargent Cranberrybush - Sale Price: $68.50 The Sargent Cranberrybush Viburnum, Viburnum sargentii, is very similar to American Cranberrybush, but will not grow as large. This shrub has beautiful white blooms with a low-to-the-ground branching habit. It will form a large upright, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub. It has a fantastic red fruit display with bright, translucent red drupes lasting well into January.  In the fall, it provides an excellent red-purple color. 'Sargent Cranberrybush' Viburnum is very much like the 'Snowball' Viburnum, except that the leaves are thicker in texture, and it bears fruit. When used as a specimen or patio tree, leave plenty of room for root expansion.  It grows best in full sun or partial shade, in moist, well-drained soil.  Sargent is very vigorous and resistant to aphids.  Will fruit best in sun but will also grow and flower in partial shade. Viburnums add seasonal interest with flowers, colorful fruits, fall color, stem and bark color, texture, and form.  There is always space for a viburnum in any landscape, and this one will look terrific in yours as well!
