Grape - Kay Gray - Sale Price: $49.95 The Kay Gray Grape, Vitis 'Kay Gray', has medium to large berries that are produced in small clusters on productive vines. It produces fine hardy white grapes, has a white slipskin, and is suited for fresh eating and wine making. Flavor varies with climate, ranging from a rather ordinary labrusca to a pleasant fruity flavor, depending on where it is grown. Its virtues include early ripening, low acid levels, disease resistance, and good winter hardiness. The best part of this variety is the vine. In addition to the good resistance to disease, the vine has withstood -42 degrees without damage. It ripens in early September. This grape tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, but must have good drainage. Grapes are primarily grown for fruit production in home fruit gardens where they provide good ornamental value: bold summer foliage, showy fruit, some fall color and shaggy, twisted trunking and branching often best seen in winter. Grapes need a good support system like fences, walls, trellises, arbors or other structures. The grape vines can be quite attractive year-round and can provide good cover, screening, or shade to areas around the home. Grapes need full sunlight and high temperatures to ripen, so plant on southern slopes, the south side of windbreaks, or the south sides of buildings. Considered to be a good grape for juices and jellies. Birds love grapes, so be sure to plant some to share. Kay Gray was developed by the Wisconsin grape breeder Elmer Swenson in 1980 and is named after a family friend.

Strawberry - Ft. Laramie - Sale Price: $39.95 ‘Ft. Laramie’ is a super-sturdy, everbearing cultivar that produces a smaller, but more constant, supply of berries through the season. The winter-hardy, perennial plants are resistant to leaf spot and yield sizable harvests of good-sized fruit with firm texture and a strong, sweet strawberry flavor. The more sun they get, the more they produce, so choose a site that gets full sun (a minimum of six hours a day). Suggestion: Pinch the blooms off for the first 2 months on an everbearing strawberry to increase your harvest. If your plants get blooms in the first year, you can increase the following years harvest by pinching those blooms off. Fertile, well-drained soil will give you the best flavor. ‘Ft. Laramie’ can also be planted in tubs, containers and hanging baskets. Strawberries are nutritionally heart-healthy cancer-fighters, and are naturally low in calories, so plant enough for freezing —the flavor of home-grown strawberries will be most welcome in January! NOTE: Locate your strawberry patch away from areas where you have previously grown peppers, tomatoes, eggplant or potatoes. Blueberry - Pink Lemonade - Sale Price: $42.75 The Blueberry 'Pink Lemonade', Vaccinium 'Pink Lemonade', produces white flowers that are tinged pink. They appear on this blueberry in early spring, then pale green berries follow the flowers, ripening to a deep pink with a good mild flavor and firmness. 'Pink Lemonade' offers great fall and winter interest! In fall, leaves turn golden yellow then bright orange. Then in the wintertime twigs are dusky reddish-brown. Moisture content should be adequate and even. Plant 'Pink Lemonade' in borders, beds or in a mass planting mixed in with other ornamentals or perennials. The fruit attracts songbirds and other wildlife to the garden.

Blackberry - Chester Thornless - Sale Price: $42.75 One of the best self-pollinating blackberry varieties available because of its huge yield, sweet fruit, cold hardiness, resistance to cane blight and, of course, lack of thorns. The fast-growing canes are sturdy, but still require a little support as they can get up to 10’ long. Fruit comes on last year’s growth, usually in July. The juiciest, most flavorful berries come from a life in full sun, attentive watering, proper mulching and good weed control. ‘Chester Thornless’ produces large deeply-flavored, absolutely delicious berries for preserves and freezing, but best of all for fresh use on ice cream or baked into cobblers and pies. The grocery-store price for blackberries is nearly prohibitive these days; when one plant can produce as much as 20 pounds of berries, you can do the math. A must-have in the home garden. Zones 5-8. Blackberries thrive in sandy or good to average garden soil. Plant them in full sun. In home gardens, keep plants about 3 feet apart. If planting in rows, keep them 3 feet apart in the rows, and keep the rows 5 to 8 feet apart. Mulch around the plants to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Maintain depth of mulch by adding as necessary throughout the year. This food is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Vitamin E, Folate, Magnesium, Potassium and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Manganese.

Raspberry - Bristol Black - Sale Price: $49.95 The Bristol Raspberry, 'Rubus 'Bristol', is a fruit that is black and large with attractive, fairly glossy skin and firm flesh. Berries have excellent quality and good flavor and are good for canning and freezing as well as fresh eating. Bristol’s upright growth and cluster formation make its berries extremely easy to pick. Firm berries can be handled without bleeding. It is very hardy, high producing, vigorous and ripens in mid-July. Bristol shows tolerance to powdery mildew. The berries are versatile and can be used as fresh fruit, in preserves, or in pies and pastries. Raspberries may be grown successfully at an elevation as high as 7,000 feet. They do best in full sun on non-alkaline, fertile loam soil. However, they may be grown in partial shade or under other environmental constraints. Natural protection against strong winter winds are provided in some valleys, but in other areas it is necessary to provide artificial protection during winter months. Although a well-drained soil is essential for success, a sandy soil will need to have plenty of organic matter incorporated in preparation. Raspberries need a plentiful supply of moisture throughout the growing season. Raspberries take little space, live for years and produce crops the second season after planting. Birds also love the fruit, so you may have to share the harvest.
