Butterfly Bush - Nanho Purple - Sale Price: $56.45 Nanho Purple Butterfly Bush, Buddleia davidii 'Nanho Purple', is sometimes called the Summer Lilac. Vigorous growing multi-stem plant, it has tiny individual purple flowers that are produced in profusion in long, dense trusses from July to September. It is more compactly leafed than most Butterfly Bush varieties. In northern areas it dies back in winter, so trim to 6-10 in spring. It is crown hardy in zone 5, a good cut flower, and attracts butterflies. Butterfly bushes prefer full sun and must receive eight or more hours of sun a day to thrive and get the best blooms. Cut faded flowers off of bush regularly to keep it blooming throughout the summer. It is easily maintained at four to six feet in height, and five feet wide, if it is hard-pruned annually. It grows 6-12 inches tall, 2-4 feet wide, has small glossy leaves, and can cover a 15' diameter area, but is not invasive. This green foliage turns a bronzy red in fall and winter. The bell shaped, dainty flowers appear in the spring. The fruit, that is bright red and highly decorative, appears in late summer, persisting into fall. This low 'Massachusetts' shrub thrives in a variety of soils, but does best in poor, infertile sandy acidic soil, and is salt tolerant. Do not fertilize, and pruning is not necessary. The masses of white flower buds never open thereby remaining colorful from August until hard frost! Superb for alpine, rock or trough gardens. Due to its mild suckering, it becomes more open at maturity, with arching branches. Nannyberry is a large tree-like leggy native shrub that can be pruned into a small tree form.
