The new growth is green, maturing to maroon-red. The small, white flowers in spring produce small, red fruits in summer that are savored by birds.  This fruit is an edible chokecherry. Canada Red has a vigorous growth, straight trunk and uniform top.  Its foliage is a darker red, with a thicker leaf texture than regular Canada Red. Proper soil conditions are necessary for normal growth with this variety.  Pay special attention to insure good drainage and aeration. Plant one as a specimen tree in your front yard, or use one as a small shade tree. Your Showy Mountain Ash is just that—showy! It grows to 30 feet in height with a 25 foot spread, and has an open, rounded crown. The leaves have a lovely, tropical appearance. Princess Kay Plum is a double-flowered selection of Prunus nigra discovered in the wild in northern Minnesota. The tree form is oval with a somewhat open informal branching habit. It is a small tree that produces very pleasant and fragrant double white blooms in early May, before the leaves emerge. These flowers then turn pinkish as they age. Princess Kay Plum has foliage that is medium green and sometimes develops a reddish-purple fall color in early autumn. Fruit set is sparse and is of poor quality. The trunk and branches are almost black in color. Adaptable to a range of soil conditions, Princess Kay Plum is not tolerant of poorly drained soils or extremely droughty soils.
