It’s a cross between the Downy and Allegheny.  It’s prized particularly for its obovate 5-inch long leaves that turn to a spectacular reddish-orange in the fall. Your Serviceberry will be one of the first plants you notice in the spring.  Before your other plants have awoken to the glory of the new season, the Serviceberry will already be bursting forth in its splendor.  Before its leaves even begin to appear, its 5-peteled clusters of white flowers will stand in sharp contrast to the browns and greys of your transitioning landscape.  Soon you’ll see the flowers give way to small green berries that gradually progress from green to red, and eventually transform into a deep purple.  The fruit is ready for you to enjoy in the early summer.  The Serviceberry is a shrubby, multi-stemmed plant that grows up to 15-25 feet with an equal spread.  It’s tolerant of a wide range of soils so you won’t have to fuss over it in order for it to thrive.    Serviceberries look like large, dark blueberries and taste similar, but with an almond-like accent.  They are commonly eaten raw or used in various jams and pies.  Native Americans and early settlers enjoyed these berries for generations.  The berries were even thought by some to have medicinal properties. The Serviceberry is certainly a hardy ornamental shrub with a lot to offer. * Autumn color* Edible fruit* Hardy |
