Dianthus Shooting Star, Dianthus 'Shooting Star' PP#14,549, is another wonderful addition to the Star series of Dianthus!  Could this be the best one yet? We think so! 'Shooting Star' forms neat and compact evergreen mounds that remain attractive all season long.  The blue-green foliage is covered with hundreds of magenta purple flowers in early spring, and again in early fall after dead-heading. The delightful spicy clove fragrance is an added bonus!  Dianthus 'Shooting Star' is a small, cushion forming perennial that needs a sunny site with well-drained soil; will tolerate some shade in the afternoon along with humidity.  Regular watering during prolonged dry spells will be necessary. However, they are tolerant of short periods of dryness. These fragrant, spicy dove-like flowers look wonderful as a border plant, rock gardens, along walks or paths, for edging and a definite in cottage gardens. 'Shooting Star' provides a profusion of cheerful, charming, bright magenta purple flowers that provides a striking mound of color! * Easy to grow * Vigorous * Mounded habit

The Hosta Sum and Substance, Hosta 'Sum and Substance', has large, rounded leaves with heavy puckering.  This Hosta is slug resistant and a vigorous grower! The lavender flowers bloom from July to August, however, Hostas are not only known for their flowers.  With a plant height of 36” and a spread of 60”, this is a giant plant with colorful foliage that will need space to grow! Hosta ‘Sum and Substance’ needs to be planted in a full shade area in any moist, well-drained location.  ‘Sum and Substance’ does require some sun to enhance its golden color. ‘Sum and Substance’ was named Hosta of the Year in 2004, and one can see why.  The flowers are on 50” scapes, making it one of a kind! Plant this low care plant in an area that receives the right amount of light.  The leaves need some morning sun to bring out the best coloration; too much sun will burn the leaves.   ‘Sum and Substance’ is most at home in shady, woodland settings and often works well as specimen or edging plant.  A great choice for any beginner gardener. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5.  Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots.  It is best to keep areas around hostas clear of excess leaf debris to reduce the presence of slugs and snails.  ‘Sum and Substance’ is a huge plant with stunning leaves that will light up any large shady space! * Slug resistance * Fragrant flowers * Vigorous grower

The Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue’, Scabiosa columbaria, also known as the Pincushion Flower, has wonderful 2 lavender-blue flowers that bloom from June to October. ‘Butterfly Blue’ is a reminiscent of a pincushion full of pins. With its gray-green foliage, it has a plant height of 12” and a spread of 12-18. It is also disease resistant. Scabiosa ‘Butterfly Blue’ was name Perennial Plant of the Year in 2000, and one can see why. It is best to plant Scabiosa in full sun, with well-drained soil and should be watered regularly throughout the warmer months to increase its overall performance.
