Dewberries contain carbohydrates, vitamin c and small amounts of vitamins A and B. The Dewberry can be eaten raw, or used to make cobbler, jam, or pie. The Austin Dewberry ripens early and begins to form berries in May, extending for 30-45 days. The plant needs some support, otherwise it will trail on the ground. The ideal berries for picking will be glossy black, with a firm fell, and a little red appearing on any of the lobes.
