It displays powdery light blue flowers that are produced in late summer when few other shrubs bloom. It makes a shapely rounded bush, and its light colored lance-shaped leaves visually blur with the blue of the flowers. Before flowering, Arthur J. Simmonds makes a fine foliaged, formal shape that combines well with golden grasses. This is a relatively small shrub that will die back to the ground during the winter. Sent to America from Japan in 1861, this continues to be one of the best loved varieties. The Pee Gee can be pruned at any time except when they begin to form bloom heads in the summer. The color of blooms on a PeeGee changes during its bloom period. Beginning as a white flower, the blooms age to pink, and finally a rusty brown in autumn. The blooms can easily be used for drying. Ninebark - Summer Wine® - Sale Price: $39.95 The Physocarpus Summer Wine, Physocarpus opulifolious 'Summer Wine', is a new Ninebark that is very neat with compact branching and deeply cut, dark crimson leaves. The summer Wine is purple ninebark hybrid that resulted from a cross between Nana and Diabolo. This resulted in a shorter plant with the purple leaves. This plant requires little pruning, but if you need to prune, do it after this plant blooms. Do not prune after mid-August to allow for the flower buds to form for next years flowers. This compact ninebark looks great in a pot. Use this plant in groupings or masses, in perennial or shrub borders, containers and as a short screen. The pinkish white flowers appear in mid-summer.
