American Beech - Sale Price: $96.35 The stately American Beech was once abundant across North America, but is now found primarily in the eastern U.S. It’s a deciduous slow-grower that reaches its greatest height and longest life — 300-400 years — in rich, moist, alluvial soil. The familiar stout trunk and spreading crown sport lustrous oval leaves with distinctive parallel veins and a sawtooth margin. Beech bark is characteristically smooth and slate-gray, a really striking contrast against the deep green foliage. While beech wood is known for its durability in the flooring and furniture world, it is the triangular beech nut that has such great appeal to wildlife and people as a sweet, nutritious snack. The beloved beech nut has even lent its name to a famous chewing gum and line of baby food! It’s also one of the best-burning firewoods to be found anywhere, and its coppery-gold autumn color makes it a standout choice for a good-sized yard or bit of acreage. Zones 3-9.

Chinese Chestnut - Sale Price: $78.50 The Chinese Chestnut is currently planted as a replacement for the American Chestnut, which was obliterated by blight in the 1900s. Most store-shelf chestnuts usually come from Spain, but the Spanish Chestnut tree is not at all cold-hardy and can be vulnerable to blight as well. The Chinese Chestnut serves both as an ornamental dark-green shade tree and as a less-risky nut producer, providing its caretaker with pounds of sweet chestnuts to roast, puree, boil and even make gluten-free flour out of. This all-purpose deciduous tree is blight-resistant and prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soils in full sun, but can manage in dry soils of varying pH; hot, arid climates are OK as well. A good all-around choice for a yard shade tree, the Chinese Chestnut will bring yellow and gold color to your autumn landscape and is amazing when planted near Autumn Purple Ash. Zones 4-8.

Willow Oak - Sale Price: $85.65 The Willow Oak tree, Quercus phellos, is one of the most popular trees for streets, parks, estates, and residential properties. This shade tree is also grown as far north as Cape Cod with reasonable success. A beautiful specimen oak, the Willow Oak is a relatively fast growing species, about 2’ a year. Willow Oak trees have moderate water requirements and a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. This deciduous trees fall color is yellow to yellow-brown. The Willow Oak is a good street tree because it is tolerant of heat, drought, air pollution and standing water. Acorns are a good food source for birds and squirrels. The small leaves are easy to clean up in the fall.

Shademaster Honeylocust - Sale Price: $107.05 The Shademaster Honeylocust tree, ‘Gleditsia triacanthos inermis’, may also be called sweet-locust or thorny-locust. This deciduous tree is a moderately fast growing tree commonly found on moist bottom lands or limestone soils. Because it has proven very hardy and tolerant of drought and salinity, it is widely planted for windbreaks and soil erosion control. It is a fast growing tree with good trunk. It has a more or less rectangular outline formed by the upright ascending branches which then spread horizontally. It is an excellent street and lawn tree because it is thornless and seedless. The dark green foliage turns yellow for great fall color. This variety has been planted to replace the elm in many urban areas. Little Leaf Linden - Sale Price: $56.95 The Little Leaf Linden tree, 'Tilia cordata ', is a very good lawn shade tree and is ideally suited to home situations.  Its pyramidal to pyramidal-rounded shape and dense foliage make it an excellent landscape tree. The leaves are glossy, dark green, heart-shaped and appear in spring,  turning yellow or yellow-green in the fall.  As a rule, shade trees don't have very interesting flowers or a scent, but this hardy ‘Little Leaf’ Linden is the exception to the rule!  The small, fragrant yellowish flowers appear in June.  Small, round seeds are also produced, and they persist well into winter.   ‘Little Leaf’ Linden is widely used as a street tree due to its rapid growth rate, and often for residential landscaping.  The ‘Little Leaf’ Linden is fairly tolerant to a wide range of site conditions and requires little maintenance.  It tolerates clay soils better than many tree species and is fairly tolerant of pollution. The tree grows in sun or partial shade, and will tolerate alkaline soil if it is moist, and it transplants well; not particularly tolerant of drought. ‘Little Leaf’ has many fantastic attributes, and one of the best is that the leaves remain green on the tree long after other trees have shed! * Pyramidal shape * Fall color * Low maintenance
