Penstemon - Husker Red
The Penstemon ‘Husker Red’, Penstemon digitalis, is one of the most popular Penstemon in its family. Being Perennial of the Year in 1996, one can see why! Best known for its maroon-red foliage, the white flowers make a wonderful contrast.  Blooming in early summer, it has a plant height of 3’ and a spread of 12-18”. ‘Husker Red’ is a beautiful plant, is low maintenance, easy to transplant in spring, and very attractive to hummingbirds when in flower!  Planted in mass it provides a nice early flower display and the foliage slowly darkens and reddens over the season to provide continual interest.   It is best to plant Penstemon in a full sun location, having a moist, well-drained area.  Tough and easy to grow, it tolerates a wide variety of conditions including hot dry sites. Being drought tolerant, ‘Husker Red’ looks great in a perennial border, in a naturalized setting or for cuttings.  Hummingbirds and butterflies love this perennial, not to mention being deer resistant. The Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam’, Coreopsis verticillata, is the most popular perennial in its family. ‘Moonbeam’ was named Perennial of the Year in 1995 and one can see why. With its clusters of light yellow, daisy-like blooms and its green airy fernlike foliage, ‘Moonbeam’ Coreopsis blooms from June through October and is mildew resistant. ‘Moonbeam’ stands at 24” and has a plant spread of 18-24”. ‘Moonbeam’ should be planted in full sun. It is drought-tolerant and tough but does need well-drained soil. It should be cut backing early and late summer to extend the bloom period. This hardy hibiscus will die back to the ground every winter and emerge from the ground in the middle to late spring season; cut back to 4-6 from the ground in the spring.   'Turn of the Century' grows well in any fertile, well-drained soil with ample moisture.   Do not allow to dry to the wilting point.  Be patient; hibiscus can be slow to emerge in spring.  For best performance, plant in full sun in moist soil, before the heat of the summer.
