Purpleleaf Sandcherry - Tree Form, Prunus X Cistena 'Tree Form', is a deciduous tree, trained to grow in a small tree-like form with the primary plant grafted high atop a standard. It makes a popular, colorful accent tree with a rounded habit. The Purpleleaf Sandcherry (Tree Form) is excellent for adding lasting color to a garden! Displaying elegant purple-pink flowers in spring, it has burgundy/purple foliage all summer. This is a relatively low maintenance tree that needs full sun and well-drained soil; is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. It tends to be leggy, with a typical clearance of 3 feet from the ground. Under ideal conditions Purpleleaf Sandcherry (Tree Form) can be expected to live for approximately 20 years. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type and is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments!
