Viburnum - Dwarf European Cranberrybush Dwarf European Cranberrybush, viburnum opulus 'Compactum,' is a small, mounded, dense shrub that has compact branching and small green foliage that develops a burgundy fall color. It scarcely ever develops the white flowers, let alone cranberries. Despite not fruiting and flowering, it can be an interesting deciduous shrub, small and mounded, much more densely leafed than the majority of viburnum. It is a low maintenance shrub, and is excellent as a foundation plant or low hedge. It grows 4-5 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide. Dwarf European Cranberrybush is adaptable to permanently moist to wet soils, dry soils, poor soils, soils of various pH, heat, drought, and pollution. The trunk is stout, upright, and straight when young, becoming slightly ridged, furrowing, and arching with maturity.
