The Korean Barberry, Berberis koreana, is a dense, thorny plant useful for barrier planting. It displays small yellow flowers in hanging clusters in mid-spring and bright red berries in clusters in autumn. These berries may persist into winter. Korean Barberry has a wonderful, red, fall foliage color that will give you a colorful landscape! It requires full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, except those that are overly wet. Light pruning may be needed to maintain good shape. Use in borders, as a barrier, a hedge, or as a specimen.

Ornamental Shrub with Flashy Flowers The Neon Flash Spirea is a fast-growing, small ornamental shrub. The Aucuba Gold Dust, 'Aucuba japonica 'Variegata', is a compact growing evergreen shrub 6 to 10 feet high and has slightly less in spread w ith large glossy dark-green leaves heavily sprinkled with yellow spots. This plant will brighten any shady location. The glossy foliage appears to splashed with yellow paint. Gold Dust responds well to pruning. It can be kept severely pruned to a compact three foot by three foot shrub. Prune in the spring before new growth begins. It is ideal as a dense screen and in difficult spots in foundation plantings. It is excellent for urban sites and stands up well to inner-city pollution. Aucubas prefer shade and will thrive in the shadiest of spots, even under trees where no grass grows. 'Gold Dust' will flower in early spring and produce red berries in October.

Spreading Cotoneaster, 'Cotoneaster divaricatus', is a beautiful rounded ornamental shrub with pink flowers in the spring. It produces bright red berries in the summer and is one of the best fruiting varieties. The glossy, dark green foliage turns red in the fall. It is marginally hardy in zone 4. This medium-sized ornamental shrub matures at about 7' tall by 8' wide and has an upright columnar growth habit in youth, but quickly becoming horizontal and spreading with age. Spreading Cotoneaster prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, but is very adaptable and urban tolerant. It has few disease and pest problems. Its fall color is a nice mixture of green, yellow, orange, red, and burgundy, slowly becoming deciduous.

Madame Lemoine Lilac, Syringa vulgaris 'Madame Lemoine', is a French Hybrid Lilac that forms a wide spreading plant with double, fragrant, pure white flowers produced freely in May.
