When in zone 4, this plant needs adequate snow cover for a consistent spring bloom. You need to prune immediately after spring flowering. Gold Tide is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils, in full sun to part shade, but the best flower production is in full sun. With its compact-spreading shape, it typically grows to only 20” tall but spreading to as much as 4’ wide. Group them in borders, foundations or on banks or slopes. Viburnum - Spring Green Compact Cranberrybush - Sale Price: $92.75 The Spring Green Compact Cranberrybush Viburnum, Viburnum trilobum 'Spring Green', has an outstanding compact form that can be easily maintained to 4 feet in height. Spring Green’s foliage emerges reddish and ages to a glossy dark green.  The white flowers are very attractive, and somewhat fragrant. It produces orange fruit, which persists into winter, and then displays a stunning red fall color.  'Spring Green' does best in moist, well-drained, loamy soils, but will tolerate less than ideal conditions and heavier clay soils. Pruning allows this shrub to maintain its natural shape while encouraging the development of new wood. Viburnum - Summer Snowflake - Sale Price: $39.95 Viburnum - Summer Snowflake, Viburnum plicatum 'Summer Snowflake', is a compact, dense, upright, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub which typically matures 3' to 5' tall with a similar spread. In the spring, 'Summer Snowflake' will bloom with clusters of white flowers that follow along the horizontal stems, creating a double row of blooms on each side. This bloom pattern gives 'Summer Snowflake' its common name - doublefile viburnum. It is a leggy, suckering, deciduous shrub, somewhat irregular in shape. It is a strong, long lived; popular shrub that is easily grown in a neutral soil, with peat or leaf mold enrichment, and it prefers full sun. Katherine Havemeyer Lilac tolerates light shade, but best bloom is in full sun. It grows 10-12 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide which makes a very colorful border or screen. It has a very well branched head with lots of fragrant blooms; this pretty, spreading lilac makes an excellent backdrop for a shrub border.
