Eastern Redbud
One of the earliest spring bloomers. The Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is one of the first trees to flower in the spring. What a welcome sight for you and your neighbors after a long winter. Large, showy clusters of soft pink to magenta flowers appear in late winter or early spring. The Eastern Redbuds unique form and shape are highlighted by the blooms as they can grow right out of the trunk and branches. The tree will be truly covered in gorgeous pink to purple blossoms. Soon after your Redbud blooms, light green, perfectly heart shaped leaves will emerge. This forms the perfect backdrop to enhance the stunning blossoms color. From summer to fall the leaves transform from a shimmering light green; will darken to a beautiful emerald green and finally turn a bright golden yellow.  The Eastern Redbud grows 1-2 feet a year; its mature height is 20-30 feet. The Overcup Oak tree, Quercus lyrata, is a long-lived, very sturdy shade tree that will thrive in a wide variety of soil conditions.  This oak tree is long overlooked by growers; the tree is just starting to be more popular and thus more readily available for home landscapes! It is an important tree in difficult urban landscaping situations with uniform branching forming a rounded shape with an open crown.  The ‘Overcup’ Oak has brilliant reddish or gray brown bark and displays leathery dark green leaves in summer; fall color is a rich yellow-brown.  The ‘Overcup’ Oak is easy to transplant and tolerates most soil conditions and partial shade to full sun.  Acorns are produced annually and are relatively small, usually between 1/2 an 1 inch. Attractive Shrub with Edible Nuts The Hazelnut is a lovely shrub that will provide edible nuts in the fall and be a friend to wildlife year round.  Plant some as a hedgerow along your property boarder, or plant several in a naturalized area where they’ll be able to spread.   The Hazelnut is a remarkable plant.  It can grow almost anywhere and achieve its mature size in no time at all.  It won’t mind if you prune it at any time of the year, so you can trim and mold it to whatever shape or space you prefer.  It grows to 12 feet tall with a 15 foot spread, so you don’t need much space in your yard to enjoy a Hazelnut, and wildlife will thank you for providing them with one of their favorite plants. In the spring, 3-inch clusters of male catkins appear, their yellow-brown tassels gently swaying in the warm breeze.  If you look close you’ll discover the female flower.  It’s a tiny purple surprise hidden among the branches.  Dark green, heart-shaped, 3-6 inch serrated leaves will soon fill out your Hazelnut for summer. When fall arrives, your Hazelnut colors will vary, from oranges and yellows to the color of a deep red wine.
