Hosta - Sum and Substance
The Hosta Sum and Substance, Hosta 'Sum and Substance', has large, rounded leaves with heavy puckering.  This Hosta is slug resistant and a vigorous grower! The lavender flowers bloom from July to August, however, Hostas are not only known for their flowers.  With a plant height of 36” and a spread of 60”, this is a giant plant with colorful foliage that will need space to grow! Hosta ‘Sum and Substance’ needs to be planted in a full shade area in any moist, well-drained location.  ‘Sum and Substance’ does require some sun to enhance its golden color. ‘Sum and Substance’ was named Hosta of the Year in 2004, and one can see why.  The flowers are on 50” scapes, making it one of a kind! Plant this low care plant in an area that receives the right amount of light.  The leaves need some morning sun to bring out the best coloration; too much sun will burn the leaves.   ‘Sum and Substance’ is most at home in shady, woodland settings and often works well as specimen or edging plant.  A great choice for any beginner gardener. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5.  Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots.  It is best to keep areas around hostas clear of excess leaf debris to reduce the presence of slugs and snails.  ‘Sum and Substance’ is a huge plant with stunning leaves that will light up any large shady space! * Slug resistance * Fragrant flowers * Vigorous grower
