Juniper - Spartan Spiral, Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan Spiral', is a narrow, pyramidal evergreen with dark mint green foliage. Spartan Spiral is a dense, rapid grower and makes an excellent sheared topiary, screen or windbreak; perfect for a tight spot where you want some height. It can be trimmed into a tight spiral, Spartan provides a wonderful vertical accent with rich green foliage that has both wedge-shaped juvenile leaves and scale-like adult leaves. This durable juniper should be trimmed twice yearly to maintain shape and desired height. If you plant it in a spacious, quality heavyweight concrete or ceramic container, you can then gradually shape as you see fit. Tolerating heat, cold and drought, it is also deer resistant.

The Grey Owl Juniper, J. virginiana 'Grey Owl', is a handsome, medium-sized, slightly vase-shaped, vigorous evergreen with widely spreading branches and loose, airy, silvery-gray foliage. This evergreen shrub is similar to Pfitzer Juniper in habit. The branch tips sometimes turn purple in winter. Female Grey Owls set abundant cones. Prune junipers in June after the new growth has time to establish. With most evergreens it is easy to remember Prune in June. 'Grey Owl' is excellent for use as screen, background, or accent. It withstands a wide variety of soils and growing conditions and very long lived. It produces attractive silver-blue berries. It is called 'Grey Owl' because it has a grey and ghostly look. Quince - Spreading, Chaenomeles japonica, is an adaptable, easy to grow deciduous thornless shrub that does best in full sun. Also referred to as the Japanese Flowering Quince, this shrub is tolerant of dry soils, and periodic pruning improves bloom. This sprawling plant has crowded gnarled branches and a low crooked habit. Old canes and suckers can be removed every year. The Spreading Quince needs ample room to ramble, so make sure other plants are not nearby that will be affected by its spreading habit. It has dark green foliage and pink to white flowers that appear in late spring or early summer. The leaves are untoothed, dark green above, and pale with a dense felt of grey wool beneath (especially when young). They turn a rich yellow in autumn. The fruits are light golden-yellow, green or orange, usually pear shaped, but sometimes round and apple-shaped. A quince is delicious stewed, baked, made into fruit butter and should not be eaten raw-- almost anything that can be done with apples can be done with quinces!
