Spiraea Double Play® Artist, Spiraea japonica 'Galen' PPAF, is an exceptional spirea that gives double enjoyment with its stunning foliage and vibrant flowers. Spiraea Double Play® Artist PPAF emerges a rich purple red in the spring, and then eventually matures to a blue-green with pure pink flowers. The plant is a compact, full bodied mound that is perfect for use as a shrub border as well as a specimen plant. You will love this plant from the moment it flushes in the spring! Flowers are attractive to butterflies. It has no serious insect or disease problems, and is effective in borders, cottage gardens, foundation plantings, or hedges. It prefers average, well drained soils, and pruning is best done after blooming in mid-summer. To promote flowering, remove faded flower clusters (or deadhead). The further north it grows, the more sun required, and the further south the more shade tolerant it will prove. The Physocarpus Summer Wine, Physocarpus opulifolious 'Summer Wine', is a new Ninebark that is very neat with compact branching and deeply cut, dark crimson leaves. The summer Wine is purple ninebark hybrid that resulted from a cross between Nana and Diabolo. This resulted in a shorter plant with the purple leaves. This plant requires little pruning, but if you need to prune, do it after this plant blooms. Do not prune after mid-August to allow for the flower buds to form for next years flowers. This compact ninebark looks great in a pot. Use this plant in groupings or masses, in perennial or shrub borders, containers and as a short screen. The pinkish white flowers appear in mid-summer. It is a vigorous grower with purplish tips on the foliage in spring. The leaves turn purple in fall for a striking color display. It is an upright, rounded shrub that is excellent as a small hedge, and when not in bloom, it is still an attractive neat plant. Thriving in most locations, Froebelii is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun; tolerates light shade. Removing faded flower clusters encourages additional bloom. The Cotoneaster Peking, Cotoneaster 'acutifolia', is an erect shrub with slender spreading branches. The Peking Cotoneaster is best used as a hedge, or in groupings. This shrub displays yellow to red fall foliage and performs best in moist, well-drained soils. This shrub does well in partial shade to full sun light. Cotoneaster may be appreciated more for its dark green foliage than its blossoms. The small flowers are white to pinkish.
