Spiraea Double Play® Artist, Spiraea japonica 'Galen' PPAF, is an exceptional spirea that gives double enjoyment with its stunning foliage and vibrant flowers. Spiraea Double Play® Artist PPAF emerges a rich purple red in the spring, and then eventually matures to a blue-green with pure pink flowers. The plant is a compact, full bodied mound that is perfect for use as a shrub border as well as a specimen plant. You will love this plant from the moment it flushes in the spring! Flowers are attractive to butterflies. It has no serious insect or disease problems, and is effective in borders, cottage gardens, foundation plantings, or hedges. It prefers average, well drained soils, and pruning is best done after blooming in mid-summer. To promote flowering, remove faded flower clusters (or deadhead). The further north it grows, the more sun required, and the further south the more shade tolerant it will prove. The Mount Airy Fothergilla, Fothergilla major 'Mount Airy', is an upright deciduous shrub with a slow growth rate. This shrub must be planted in acid soils in order to perform (use sulfur at planting). 'Mount Airy' produces fragrant flower spikes that resemble a bottle brush and is a heavy bloomer. The foliage is blue-green on top, whitish beneath in the summer, and has an outstanding yellow/orange/red color in the fall. The fall foliage can take on various hues (orange, yellow, green, purplish), sometimes all on one leaf! 'Mount Airy' makes a great foundation or shrub border. The Aucuba Gold Dust, 'Aucuba japonica 'Variegata', is a compact growing evergreen shrub 6 to 10 feet high and has slightly less in spread w ith large glossy dark-green leaves heavily sprinkled with yellow spots. This plant will brighten any shady location. The glossy foliage appears to splashed with yellow paint. Gold Dust responds well to pruning. It can be kept severely pruned to a compact three foot by three foot shrub. Prune in the spring before new growth begins. It is ideal as a dense screen and in difficult spots in foundation plantings. Smooth sumac is a short-lived pioneer, which reproduces clonally via root suckers. Seed production is moderately abundant, and seeds are dispersed by birds. Growth is rapid. Lifespan is about 20-30 years, though clones can persist for centuries. Fruit is important as winter bird food. This is an important deer browse species. It is suited to group plantings in small to large yards. It is especially useful in attracting birds to naturalized yards. |
