The Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’, Ajuga reptans, is a useful ground cover with short spikes of blue flowers. This Ajuga is one of the most popular, forming striking mounds of leaves dappled in green, pink and cream. During the wintertime, Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’ develops rich bronze and burgundy tones. The flowers appear in late spring on 6” spikes with a plant spread of 12-18”. ‘Burgundy Glow’ should be planted 6-9” apart for a beautiful ground cover. Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’ will do best in a shaded area but will adapt to morning sun. (The foliage colors will be more vivid with morning sun.) It prefers moist soil with a good drainage but will tolerate moderately dry areas. Do avoid soggy conditions. This Ajuga looks great in rock gardens, as a border plants, in mass plantings and is great for preventing erosion. It is relatively carefree; however, it can be invasive. Butterflies and hummingbirds are definitely attracted to Ajuga, not to mention being deer resistant and a low allergen. The Grass 'Porcupine', Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus', has green leaves with cream colored horizontal bands. These leaves make this ornamental grass stand out anywhere! Silvery white plumes rise 4 feet above the foliage in fall. The 'Porcupine' tolerates a wide range of soil types and is moderately drought tolerant. It will hold up to wind and snow. This grass has a rigid, upright habit and stiff, pointed leaf blades, some of which stick out at angles like porcupine quills. Use this plant as a specimen, for mass plantings, or plant next to ponds or pools. Water this grass regularly, mainly during the season when they are blooming, as you need to have well developed roots so that the grass can absorb enough nutrition from the soil. When clumps dry in the fall they add structural interest to the winter garden. In early spring remove the dead foliage before the plants begins new growth. Clumps may be divided every 3 years or so in early spring. It is deer resistant and has very has very little pest and disease issues. Tall, tough, and showy!

Hosta Little Sunspot, Hosta 'Little Sunspot', is cute and petite. This small hosta is great for containers or landscape edging. Hosta 'Little Sunspot' was developed by Briggs Nursery and is a sport of 'Little Aurora'.  The small gold leaves are boldly edged with .5 green margins and are slightly cupped.  In midsummer, white flowers with delicate pale lavender stripes, are produced on 16 tall scapes.   'Little Sunspot' is a low care perennial and is ideal for shady positions and is one of the most popular for landscapes.  It is best to keep areas around hostas clear of excess leaf debris to reduce the presence of slugs and snails. It grows well in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5.  Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. Plant 'Little Sunspot' in an area that receives the right amount of light.  The leaves need some morning sun to bring out the best coloration; too much sun will burn the leaves. The Grass 'Graziella' Maiden, Miscanthus sinensis 'Graziella', is an earlier blooming, more compact maiden grass. It has slender green foliage on clumps with large white blooms in late summer. The fine texture of the leaves set it apart from other garden grasses. 'Graziella' is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Although it is a versatile ornamental grass, the clumps of this plant need lots of room. This grass is tolerant of a wide range of soils from well-drained sandy soils to the heavy clays. The Yarrow ‘Paprika’, Achillea millefolium, is an upright gold centered, fading to light pink & creamy yellow, Yarrow that blooms from June through September. With fern-like aromatic silvery to gray-green foliage, it is considered to be one of the best yarrows in any landscape. The foliage has a somewhat strong, spicy aroma, which persists when used in dried arrangements. The flower heads are 3-4” wide, with a spread of 18-24” and a height of 24”. This Yarrow does well in average garden soils, but prefers lean, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil. (Avoid heavy clays and moist, rich, fertile soils.) Yarrow should be planted in full sun and is tolerant to hot humid summers. ‘Paprika’ is excellent for cutting, fresh or dried. Remove faded flowers regularly to promote continued blooming.
