Cotoneaster - Northern Bordersâ„¢ The Cotoneaster 'Northern Borders', Cotoneaster horizontalis 'Variegatus', is a slow growing, semi-evergreen groundcover with green leaves edged in white. It provides four seasons of interest: in spring this cotoneaster has rosy buds that open to tiny white flowers along the cinnamon-colored twigs. Later, the plant is laden with shiny scarlet fruit (¼ inch) liberally sprinkled throughout. These berries add color throughout winter, and provide food for songbirds and wildlife. The lovely, orange-red fall color compliments the shiny red fruit outstanding blue-green foliage rimmed in white produces an overall silver effect in the landscape. During winter the 'Northern Border' loses its leaves, revealing the celebrated fan or herringbone branch pattern for which this species is known. Thriving in full sun, this cotoneaster has a wide tolerance of soil types and moisture levels. Zones 5-8
