Crabapple - Red Barron The Red Barron Crabapple, Malus 'Red Baron', has a narrowly upright, columnar growth habit. As its profuse red buds open in spring, the tree is draped in striking clusters of fragrant red flowers along the branches! It has dark green foliage which emerges coppery bronze in spring; these pointy leaves turn an outstanding orange in the fall. Red Barron's fruits are deep, shiny red, giving this crabapple its name; fruit is the size of a cherry and ripens early to late fall. The falling leaves reveal the glorious color of the fruit. Red Baron has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 2 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. This muti-seasonal tree should be grown in full sunlight for best color. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type, is highly tolerant of urban pollution, and will even thrive in inner city environments!
