The Grass 'Dwarf Fountain Grass', Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln', is a great grass for a specimen or in mass plantings. The leaves are narrow and arch. The seed-heads resemble bottle brushes which are a rose copper bristly head. It truly gives a fountain like appearance. The mature flowers last until winter freezes shatter the seed heads! Ornamental Grasses are gaining in popularity all over the U.S. due to their undemanding nature and long lasting, year round beauty. The Grass 'Shenandoah Switch Grass', Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah', has a burgundy-red color to the foliage. This one starts out red in June, by mid-summer it looks like Bloodgrass, and in fall, it is a rich burgundy. The foliage starts out as deep green but takes on the red color thru the summer. The 4' height makes this a good choice for a specimen plant. It is one of the shortest Switch Grass varieties available. Given full sun and average soil, it is a moderate to fast grower.
