Holly - Heller's Japanese
The Japanese Holly 'Heller's', Ilex crenata 'Helleri', is a very dense and dwarf form that reaches a height of 3 feet with an equal spread. It is a good substitute for boxwood because of its small dark green leaves. 'Heller's' can be used as an accent plant, in mass plantings, as a landscape specimen, and in rock gardens. This plant is used in the landscape in front of taller shrubs for a contrast in your landscape scene. It is best that it has a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. This plant performs best in moist, well-drained acidic soils. As with most other hollies, this plant is deer resistant! Zones 6-9

Japanese Andromeda - Brouwers Beauty, Pieris x 'Brouwers Beauty', starts off in the spring with a heavy crop of purplish-red buds that bloom into white flowers on a dense, compact, shrub. Brouwers Beauty is a great choice for an early blooming, hardy, deer resistant evergreen shrub. Its deep green foliage compliments the brilliant red buds that become lovely white blossoms in early spring. This Lily-of-the-Valley shrub has a slow growth and refined habit, but makes an excellent choice for the urban landscape. A bit of extra care will ensure a healthy vibrant plant. Add plenty of organic matter to the planting site and cover with a mulch of well-rotted compost; poorly drained soils can result in root rot.
