Holly - Sky Pencil The Holly Sky Pencil, Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil', is a densely branched and foliaged evergreen accent plant. This holly has an outline that looks like a green column. Its lustrous dark green leaves are beautiful throughout the seasons. Mature size is 6 to 10 feet high and 1 1/2 to 2 feet wide. The Sky Pencil is excellent in a container or for vertical element in the garden. This plant prefers light, moist but well-drained, slightly acid soils in either sun or partial shade. It transplants easily and does not need pruning to maintain growth habit. The Sky Pencil Holly can be trimmed to any height the grower desires. Use this plant as a single specimen; dense hedge; or mixed with other evergreen and deciduous plants. It is excellent for formal spaces or foundation plantings. The ornamental berries attract birds.
