Kentucky Coffee Tree
Unique tree with great fall color The Kentucky Coffee Tree, Gymnocladus Dioicus, may also be known as American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogony, nicker tree, or stump tree. Kentucky Coffee trees are large round-barked trees belonging to the legume family.   It reaches heights of 60 to 100 feet. Its short trunk, 1 to 2 feet in diameter, divides into several large branches. The leaves are ovalish and are 2-4 inches long. An unofficial state tree of Kentucky, the Kentucky Coffee Tree is closely related to the honeylocust. This deciduous tree is ideal as a shade tree on larger, ungroomed properties. It got its name because early North American colonists used the large seeds to make coffee. When eaten raw, the seeds are poisonous. The bark is deeply furrowed and dark brown in color. It adapts well to urban conditions and has wonderful fall color that starts a brilliant yellow  then turning to orange.

Dawn Redwood - DetailsDawn Redwood - Sale Price: $78.50
Fast-Growing Massive Tree The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a massive, fast-growing tree.  It would look great as a shade tree in your yard or as a street planting.  It would also look attractive as a container plant on your patio while it’s still small. The Dawn Redwood is the shortest of the Redwoods, but can still grow up to 200 feet in height.    It can be quite easy to grow, so you won’t have to spend much of your time on care or maintenance. Despite its massive size, the Dawn Redwood has a gentleness about it.  Run the foliage through your fingers.  You’ll experience its soft and fern-like texture, so unlike what you might expect from a large deciduous tree.  The foliage begins as light green in the spring, transforming to deep green in the summer.  The leaves turn a lovely reddish-bronze before their autumn descent in preparation for a winter rest. The Redwood has horizontal branching that continues all the way to the ground, affording it a stately pyramidal presence in your yard.  If you prefer ground clearance though, it adapts well to being trimmed a bit.   The Redwood is an ancient tree known to have been in existence as long as 50 million years ago, but is currently on the endangered list in the wild.  Growing a Dawn Redwood is a pleasure in and of itself, but growing one on your property is also an investment in the future. * Fast growing* Massive size* Hardy

Winter King Hawthorn - DetailsWinter King Hawthorn - Sale Price: $114.20
Small Ornamental Tree with Outstanding Winter Interest  The Winter King Hawthorn is a small ornamental tree with particular winter interest. It would do well anywhere you’d like an ornamental tree but don’t have much room. The outstanding feature of your Hawthorn is its winter features. The silver-grey bark tends to peel, revealing an inner peachy-copper hue. This is best exposed after the dark green leaves transform to their golden reds in autumn and fall to the ground. The younger branches tend toward a lighter green shade, giving your Hawthorn additional color and contrast. It’s in autumn when you’ll also notice the ½ inch bright red berries. The berries remain through the winter and are a welcome treat for your wildlife. Your Winter King Hawthorn can reach a height of 30 feet with an equal spread. The 2 inch glossy green leaves with serrated edges do a terrific job of filling out the canopy, aiding in the dense growth pattern of your tree. You’ll love the clusters of ¾ inch white flowers that appear, their gentle fragrance a welcome addition to your spring yard. The Winter King Hawthorn is a hardy tree that is relatively small in stature but will still provide you with year-round interest. However, the time it truly shines is in the winter. A Hawthorn in your yard during the winter months has the effect of a silvery-grey tree decorated with dangling red berries. Hackberry - DetailsHackberry - Sale Price: $64.25
Fast Growing Tree with Edible Fruit The Hackberry is a fast growing, deciduous tree that produces edible fruit. Plant one in your yard for its shade and seasonal interest, especially if you have a place where the soil is too poor for other trees. Your Hackberry can grow up to 60 feet with a 40-50 foot spread, so it’s quite an expansive shade tree for your yard. It has a cylindrical shape with 5-inch alternate, green leaves with undersides of a slightly yellow hue. Those leaves will turn completely yellow in autumn for a showy accent in your yard. Your Hackberry’s foliage arrives at the same time as the ¼-inch spring flowers, giving your tree a vivacious, lime-green appearance that will certainly draw your eye. Those flowers will eventually give way to 1/3-inch, deep-purple drupes that can persist on your tree into the winter months. The drupes have a somewhat date-like flavor and were traditionally used by Native Americans as a food source. Wildlife will also treasure the tiny fruits for the added nutrition they can provide, in addition to the shelter and nesting opportunities the tree presents. The Hackberry’s trunk has a corky appearance, offering some added decorative definition to the barren winter landscape. That wood can also be used for furniture or other projects (it’s soft but heavy). Hackberry trees are tolerant of most conditions, including wind and urban conditions. It’s a great way to have an impressive shade tree with ornamental appeal in less time than other large trees would require. The edible fruit sweetens the deal as a fun and useful addition to an already outstanding tree. * Fast-growing shade* Spring and fall color* Edible fruit* Wildlife interest

Satomi Dogwood - DetailsSatomi Dogwood - Sale Price: $37.95
Unique Dogwood with Spring and Fall Interest The Satomi Dogwood is an outstanding ornamental for spring color and fall interest.  It would look terrific in the center of a garden bed with lower plants to compliment it.  It could also stand alone in your front yard as a focal point to draw the eye.  This is a great choice for your yard as the spring blooms come a bit later in the season.  When your other spring-blooming plants are beginning to fade, your Dogwood will just be getting started.  This extension of your yard’s spring glory will begin with clusters of 4-peteled delicate pink flowers that stand out amid the landscape plantings.  As the blooms fade, the pointed, ovate leaves become prominent giving your Dogwood a lush green appearance for the summer months.  As fall approaches you’ll see your Dogwood’s foliage change to a deep red that will certainly stand out amid the usual lighter red hues. Satomi dogwoods grow to around 25 feet in height with an equal spread.  The multi-stemmed growth is horizontally-inclined, creating a lovely symmetry and low canopy.  The bark is grey and peeling which will draw your eye during the winter months.   In addition to the ornamental qualities of your Satomi Dogwood, you’ll enjoy the large, raspberry-like berries.  Birds will flock to your yard to enjoy a treat from your Dogwood, but you can also sample them for a unique, natural snack.  While not as tasty as other berries, the Dogwood berry is sometimes enjoyed primarily for its juice.   Satomi Dogwood has a lot to offer as an ornamental planting.  Year-round interest and even edible fruit for humans and wildlife make this an outstanding choice for your landscape. * Late spring display* Autumn color* Edible fruit
