The Red Sunset Maple tree, ‘Acer rubrum ‘ Red Sunset’, is one of the very best cultivars ever for fall color! Red Sunset® starts off life with a pyramidal shape that quickly rounds out with age, sporting high-gloss, star-shaped leaves that turn the most amazing shades of tangerine-scarlet during autumn; it is an extremely showy specimen. This tree is red, red, red: red clustered flowers in spring; red winged samara (“helicopters”) and near-red branches and twigs. The Red Sunset has strong wood for a fast growing tree. It grows faster than Norway and Sugar Maples, but slower than Silver Maple. Plant your ‘Red Sunsets’ in full sun, partial sun or partial shade in average well-drained soil. It is moderately drought-tolerant. The Red Sunset is a superb choice for lawn or street planting (but not near a sidewalk); locate it so you can see it from a window. The Chickasaw Plum tree, Prunus angustifolia, is a deciduous multi-stemmed shrub or small tree which occurs in thickets, pastures, fields, fencerows, stream banks and disturbed areas. Chickasaw Plum trees are sometimes seen as a small short-trunked tree growing to 25' tall.  Beautiful 5-petaled white flowers appear along the stems in March before the foliage emerges.   The flowers are followed by small, cherry-like, edible, red to yellow plums which ripen in early to mid summer.  Although the plums may be eaten raw, they are somewhat tart and acidic, and are perhaps best used in preserves and jellies. Native Americans regularly consumed the fruit fresh or dried it for winter.  The sweet fruit is eaten by deer, bear, fox and raccoon. The American Linden tree, Tilia americana, is a rapid growing tree with fragrant yellow flowers and large, dense foliage that provides excellent shade.  Its shape is pyramidal in youth, but rounded at maturity.   This Linden is a medium to large tree that is native east of the Missouri River in North Dakota.  American Linden is desirable as a landscape tree for its large stature, shade and aromatic flowers. Fruit with attached pale-green bract, gives this tree a two-tone appearance in late summer.  Use as a shade, boulevard, or park tree. I t needs open landscape areas due to its large size and spreading root system. Although it tolerates dry soil and clay, American Linden cannot be located in wet sites; keep soil mulched; tolerant of alkaline soils; needs full sun to partial shade. The Scotch Pine tree, Pinus Sylvestris, is a conifer that is a native of Europe and is widely used as a Christmas Tree! It is a fast growing, irregularly shaped tree.  The evergreen foliage consists of short, twisted needles, which are bluish-green and often change to yellow-green in winter.  Older trees have orange-colored bark in the crown.   It is a very winter hardy tree and is well suited throughout the Great Plains and Southern Canada.  It is known for its tolerance of poor soils that may be sandy, rocky, or of heavy clay! It can reach a height of six feet in six years with good care.  When used in windbreaks, it should be placed in east or south inside rows and works best in partial shade to full sun.  The Scotch Pine does best in well-drained soils and is adaptable to nearly all climates! Arborvitae - Little Giant, Thuja occidentalis 'Little Giant', is slow-growing and spherical with rich green leaves. In general, this conifer is a tall columnar to conical; an evergreen tree with fissured, reddish bark. Its scale-like leaves are ovate, mid to dark-green on top, lighter beneath. Females bear small cones with a small terminal hook on each scale. With its rich green soft textured foliage, Little Giant becomes a very useful shrub in the landscape; used for specimen, foundation plantings, and low borders. Tolerant of wet soils and coastal conditions, very little pruning is needed to maintain shape. Little Giant is an extremely hardy dwarf globe evergreen.
