Blazing Star - Kobold Gayfeather
The Liatris ‘Kobold Gayfeather’, Liatris spicata, has tall, lilac-rose spike-shaped flowers with a fluffy appearance and dark green foliage. These unique flowers open from the top down and bloom from June to September.  It is a major butterfly and bee attractor. Liatris ‘Kobold’ has a plant height of 2’ and a spread of 12-18” and should be planted in full sun in a well-drained area.  It does prefer a bit more moisture than most Liatris, but do not over water. Liatris ‘Kobold’ looks great as a perennial background, with grasses or white blooming flowers such as Physostegia ‘Miss Manners’. The Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’, Ajuga reptans, is a useful ground cover with short spikes of blue flowers. This Ajuga is one of the most popular, forming striking mounds of leaves dappled in green, pink and cream. During the wintertime, Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’ develops rich bronze and burgundy tones. The flowers appear in late spring on 6” spikes with a plant spread of 12-18”. ‘Burgundy Glow’ should be planted 6-9” apart for a beautiful ground cover. Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’ will do best in a shaded area but will adapt to morning sun. (The foliage colors will be more vivid with morning sun.) It prefers moist soil with a good drainage but will tolerate moderately dry areas. Do avoid soggy conditions. The Yarrow ‘Terra Cotta’, Achillea 'Terra Cotta', is an upright salmon pink with flowers that age to rusty terracotta orange. The flowers bloom from June through September. With silvery foliage, it is beautiful when planted in front of dark foliaged perennials or mixed with blue flowers. The flower heads are 3-4” wide, with a spread of 18-24” and a height of 36”. ‘Terra Cotta’ Yarrow is excellent for cuttings, fresh or dried, in mass plantings or as a border plant. Terra Cotta is inclined to spread, so site this carefully. This Yarrow can tolerate poor soil conditions, but does best in lean, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil. (Avoid heavy clays and moist, rich, fertile soils.) Yarrow should be planted in full sun and is tolerant to hot humid summers. The Polemonium Stairway to Heaven, Polemonium reptans ‘Stairway to Heaven’, has wonderful green leaves with white leaf margins that are tinged pink.  The pale lavender blue flowers are ¾ inches and are bell-shaped. ‘Stairway to Heaven’ blooms from June to July with a plant height of 1-2’ and a spread of 12-15””.  It needs to be planted in a fully shaded area but will tolerate some morning sun in well-drained soil.  It is attractive to bees and butterflies and easy to maintain. The Astilbe ‘Rheinland’, Astilbe japonica, has striking tall, feathery blooms of clear pink that rise above the foliage, adding a light, airy quality.  It has mid green foliage, changing to green in the spring.  The flowers contrast wonderfully with the glossy foliage. Astilbe ‘Rheinland’ blooms in midsummer and is 24” tall and has a plant width of 18”. Do not allow Astilbe ‘Rheinland’ to dry out since it prefers moist, humusy, organically rich soils.  It is most successfully grown in a shady area, but can tolerate some morning sun. The Dianthus Fire Star, Dianthus 'Fire Star' (PPAF), has vibrant red flowers with a dark red eye.  The flowers provide a striking contrast as they appear on evergreen, glaucous grey-green foliage; the foliage gives off a spicy scent of cloves!   The red flowers with a deeper crimson eye appear on stems rising slightly above the foliage mound to 8” tall; flowers bloom 3-5 per stem.  Flowering may continue sporadically throughout the summer.
