The Hosta Ripple Effect, Hosta 'Ripple Effect’, has plenty of bright color that will attract everyone's attention!  Ripple Effect is a unique hosta that is a sport of ‘June’. It produces long, twisted, and narrow gold leaves that have a “ripple” effect.  When the new leaves emerge, they have narrow blue-green margins that blend nicely toward their golden yellow centers.   The foliage makes a transition in the summer: to chartreuse with green margins.  Having lots of appeal, this low horizontal mounding hosta displays its lavender flowers in the summer, rising above its unique foliage. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5.  Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots.  It is best to keep areas around hostas clear of excess leaf debris to reduce the presence of slugs and snails.  Plant this low care plant in an area that receives the right amount of light.  The leaves need some morning sun to bring out the best coloration; too much sun will burn the leaves.  'Ripple Effect’ is most at home in shady, woodland settings and often works well as specimen or edging plant. The Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan’, Rudbeckia fulgida, is an easy to grow perennial with large flower heads of golden- yellow and black to brown centers. The flower heads are 3½ to 5 inches across, with a plant spread of 18-24” and a height of 24”.  The dark green foliage sits at the bottom on the tall daisy-like flowers that bloom from July to September. The Nigra Hollyhock, 'Alcea rosea', has large single, very dark maroon to almost black flowers.  (The darkest flower in this family).  The flowers grow on rigid, towering spikes or spires which typically reach a height of 4’ to 6’.  The Hollyhock family is made up of a rather large group that exhibits tall stature and is biennial in nature.   Although they are short lived, they reseed themselves.  The large blooms of  ‘Nigra’ Hollyhock flower in the summer months from June to August!   Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border, working great along walls or fences.  They are best planted in full sun in a well-drained area.  Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border and great along walls or fences; may need to be staked if planted in a windy site. ‘Nigra’ prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil.  Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions and some light shade, but will not tolerate wet winter soils.  Hollyhocks can be grown under Black Walnut trees; they are tolerant of the toxic juglone that is emitted through the trees roots. Echinacea Secret Desire (Coneflower), Echinacea 'Secret Desire', produces stunning, large double multicolored blooms of pink and orange. This mid-size plant, with beautiful aromatic flowers, is a vigorous grower and forms a plant quickly.  A mainstay in a garden, ‘Secret Desire’ is not a secret to gardeners any longer!
