The Coneflower Sundown, Echinacea Big Sky™ 'Sundown' (PP17,659), is another hybrid coneflower in the Big Sky™ series.  The flowers start out being fluorescent rose pink while buds are expanding, then change to bright rose-orange.  They eventually fade to soft purple pink.  These are very fragrant, daisy-like flowers! The ‘Sundown’ blooms from June to September and is a major attractor to butterflies and bees and is a must for any perennial gardens. The stunning flowers of 'Sundown' occur on strong stems and long dark green stems with dark green foliage. For best results, plant in full sun in a well drained area. Cone Flowers are known for their large flower heads that turn to seed in the fall. Not only is it a prized perennial for many gardeners, but also a potent medicine.  It has been reported that coneflowers increase immune function and reduces the effects of cold and flu. 'Sundown' is a great choice for cut flowers, adding a wilderness look to your garden. The Liatris ‘Kobold Gayfeather’, Liatris spicata, has tall, lilac-rose spike-shaped flowers with a fluffy appearance and dark green foliage. The Veronica Speedwell, Georgia Blue, 'Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue', is a spreading plant growing to 8 inches tall with spires of tiny, round, blue flowers in late April-May. This evergreen perennial blooms very early in the spring. It may rebloom throughout the summer. The foliage is reddish-green in spring turning to deep green in summer and finally turning bronze in fall. This spreading plant works well under small perennials and in borders, containers, rock gardens and as a groundcover. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. This plant is also salt tolerant so a seaside location would be fine. To keep tidy plants, shear back by 1/2 after flowering. If not cut back in summer, prune down to basal growth in late autumn. This plant makes a beautiful perennial groundcover! And when planted in mass, they are stunning!

Hibiscus Summer Storm (Rose Mellow), Hibiscus moscheutos 'Summer Storm', is continuously smothered with spectacular 10 wide, medium pink to rose-colored flowers, along with deeply-lobed luscious dark purple leaves.  Each flower has dark pink veining and a magenta eye that radiates through the petals! ‘Summer Storm’ puts on a fabulous show from midsummer to fall.  Moist soils are ideal, but this hibiscus is quite drought-tolerant.  All summer long you'll enjoy hundreds of these exotic flowers, along with the many butterflies, bees and hummingbirds that this plant attracts. This hardy hibiscus will die back to the ground every winter and emerge from the ground in the middle to late spring season; cut back to 4-6 from the ground in the spring.  It is root hardy and needs no protection.  Remove old canes to the ground in mid winter. Use ‘Summer Storm’ as an accent plant, landscape specimen, in mass plantings or rock gardens.  It grows well in any fertile, well-drained soil with ample moisture.  Do not allow to dry to the wilting point.  Be careful not to over-water until plants show signs of growth.  Be patient; hibiscus can be slow to emerge in spring.  For best performance, plant in full sun in moist soil, before the heat of the summer. The Dianthus ‘Bath’s Pink’, Dianthus gratianopolitanus, is a beautiful soft, light pink flower that is fringed and fragrant!   ‘Bath’s Pink’ was the 1999 Theodore Kein Plant Award Winner, and one can see why! With its grassy blue-gray foliage and profuse blooming time, ‘Bath’s Pink’ is one not to miss.  This bright and charming plant has a spread of 6-8” and a height of 6”. Dianthus will bloom from midsummer to early fall.  In order for a longer bloom time, deadhead the blooms continuously throughout the summer. Dianthus needs a sunny site with well-drained soil, but will tolerate some shade in the afternoon and humidity.  It is best to avoid planting in areas with poor drainage where crowns will remain wet in winter. The Daylily Stella Supreme, 'Hemerocallis 'Stella Supreme', is a durable perennial with its grass-like leaves that produces showy clusters of lemon-chiffon yellow lily-like blooms on tall stems. The flowers appear in late spring/early summer and continue until frost.  It grows 14 inches tall and it is very effective when planted in drifts!
